How much does a wedding at Boston Public Library actually cost?
Like many iconic Boston venues, the Boston Public Library uses a pricing structure that combines room rental fees with catering costs, and both can vary significantly depending on the space you choose.
Room rental fees alone can differ by $15,000 or more between spaces like the Guastavino Room and the more in-demand Bates Hall, so the final cost really depends on your selection of room(s) and guest count.
For weddings in the 100–150 guest range, most of the events we’ve worked on or designed for fall between $115,000–$150,000+ in total budget. Larger weddings (200+ guests) can easily exceed $200,000.
It’s also important to know that all weddings at the Boston Public Library are exclusively catered by The Catered Affair, one of the premier catering teams in Boston. While the food and service are exceptional, this is not a venue where you’ll be able to cut costs by bringing in outside catering.
For couples looking for something smaller, the library also offers micro wedding ceremony packages in the Guastavino Room:
-
Up to 12 guests (plus officiant + photographer)
-
One-hour ceremony
-
No food, beverage, or additional décor allowed
-
Limited access to specific areas for photos
-
These are offered on select Mondays and tend to book quickly.
Boston Public Library Wedding Capacity and Spaces
Weddings at the Boston Public Library can be held in a number of different spaces: most people think about classic architecture and ornate details, but BPL also offers spaces with a more modern design as well!
Here are some of the most popular options:
Courtyard – up to 200 guests for a seated ceremony, 225 for a cocktail reception.
Best for: outdoor ceremonies and cocktail hours
This is the most iconic space at the library and one of the most sought-after ceremony locations in Boston.
Guastavino Room – up to 180 for a seated dinner (150 with a dance floor), 200 for a cocktail reception.
Best for: receptions with architectural character
Known for its dramatic tiled ceilings and moody ambiance, this space works especially well for dinner and dancing.
Bates Hall – up to 220 for a seated dinner (330 with chair replacement)
Best for: large scale, statement weddings.
The long reading tables and green lamps are signature features that cannot be removed, which creates a very specific (and recognizable) aesthetic.
Abbey Room – 150 for seated ceremony or cocktail reception, 100 for seated dinner (70 with a dance floor)
Best for: indoor ceremonies or more intimate dinner receptions.
This space features grand details: Quest and Achievement of the Holy Grail, a mural by American artist Edwin Austin Abbey and a stunning fireplace made of French Rouge antique marble.
Boylston Building (Modern Wing) – around 200
Best for: couples who prefer a more contemporary design
Spaces like Deferrari Hall and Boylston Hall offer a completely different aesthetic from the historic McKim Building spaces listed above.
Can You Have the Wedding Ceremony and Reception at Boston Public Library?
Yes - and most couples do, because you cannot have a ceremony in the iconic courtyard without also hosting a reception on property.
The most popular setup is:
- Ceremony in the Courtyard
- Cocktail hour in the Courtyard or adjacent rooms
- Reception in Guastavino Room or Bates Hall
Because the library is a pubic building, events cannot begin until after it closes, which is why most ceremonies start later in the evening (7pm).
For couples planning an off-season wedding, or who want to avoid weather concerns, there are also beautiful indoor ceremony options like the Abbey Room.
What is a Typical Wedding Timeline at BPL?
Boston Public Library weddings tend to follow a later schedule than most venues:
A typical on-site wedding might look like this:
-
7:00pm — Ceremony
-
7:30-8:30pm — Cocktail hour
-
8:30pm-12:30am — Dinner and dancing
The later start is due to the building being open to the pubic during the day, and there is generally less flexibility with timing compared to traditional venues.
Set up is also affected:
- Most spaces are only available for setup starting at 5:00pm
- Some rooms within the library that are not open to the public may allow for earlier access.
One upside?
Events can run later than many Boston venues, which is ideal for couples who want a full, high-energy reception.
Insider Tips for Boston Public Library Weddings
There are a few things couples don't always realize about weddings at the Boston Public Library until they're well into the planning process:
The Courtyard is Weather-Dependent (but there is a plan!)
If you book the Courtyard for your wedding ceremony, the library will provide an indoor backup space based on your guest count at no additional cost. If you want a specific rain plan space, you'll need to reserve it in advance - and that will require an additional rental fee.
Load-In Can Be Tricky
Some doorways are as narrow as 30 inches, which can impact larger rentals like lounge furniture and statement installations like grand seating charts. The events team is great about working with vendors on alternative load in strategies, but this is not a venue for overly complex installs without comprehensive planning in advance by your vendor team. Additionally, not having flexibility with load in times could require additional labor for your vendors to properly load into the space with enough time to install.
Catering is Exclusive
Catering is a line item that is often looked at when budgeting for weddings. There's a wide range of pricing for catering a wedding, but that's not the case at Boston Public Library.
All events are handled by The Catered Affair; they'll be your point of contact from the inquiry through to the end of the wedding. They're one of the best in the city, but also one of the more premium options, so it's important to factor their costs into your overall budget early if you are concerned about costs.
The Grand Staircase Has Strict Rules
The iconic staircase is one of the most requested photo locations, but:
- Décor is highly restricted; and
- Installations are limited.
Working with a team that knows the rules will save you a lot of frustration.
Logistics Matter (More Than You Think)
The library is located in Copley Square, one of the busier areas in Boston:
- No dedicated parking garage
- Limited space for shuttle drop-off
- Heavy pedestrian traffic
We always recommend:
- Booking room blocks within walking distance
- Allowing extra time for guest arrival
Multiple Events Can Happen at Once
While not common, it is possible.
Your contract guarantees exclusivity only in the spaces you've reserved, so shared areas may have other events.
Is Boston Public Library a Good Wedding Venue?
In short: yes—but it's not for everyone.
The Boston Public Library is one of the most iconic wedding venues in the city, and for couples who want a historic, architectural, and distinctly Boston setting, it's hard to beat.
From a planning perspective, what makes it stand out is the experience:
- Guests feel like they're attending something truly unique
- The spaces are visually impactful without requiring heavy décor
- The later timeline creates a high-energy, city wedding feel
That said, it comes with tradeoffs:
- Strict timelines due to public access
- Limited setup windows
- Weather considerations for the Courtyard
- Less flexibility than traditional private venues
Bottom line:
If you're drawn to a classic architecture, dramatic spaces, and a wedding that feels uniquely Boston, the Boston Public Library is an incredible choice. If you're looking for total flexibility or a venue that is a bit more convenient for guests, you may want to explore other options.
